Dentures Over Implants
Implant-retained Dentures
Implant-retained dentures offer a hybrid solution, combining the stability of implants with the convenience of removable dentures. Unlike traditional dentures that may require adhesives, implant-supported dentures rely on implants to secure their position within the mouth. They often feature clips on the denture’s underside, which attach to posts surgically implanted in the jawbone.
Can I get implant-retained dentures?
Determining candidacy for implant-retained dentures involves assessing your overall health and jawbone condition. Ideal candidates possess healthy jawbones capable of supporting implants, along with good general health to ensure proper healing post-surgery. Healthy gums are also essential. The Process
The process involves attaching implant locators, which are the components that secure the denture to the implants. A dentist must first place the implants surgically. We then evaluate your bone, gum tissue, and spacing using x-rays or impressions. Healing typically takes three to six months after implant placement. Once healed, the dentures are fitted to the implants. In the interim, immediate dentures may be provided. In the mean time Immediate Dentures may be provided.
Implant-supported Dentures – Benefits and Advantages
Implant-supported dentures offer numerous benefits:
A close resemblance to natural teeth.
They stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone loss, and eliminate the slipping or shifting associated with traditional dentures.
Dentures may slip, shift or move over time. Implant dentures solve this problem, as they are attached firmly to the implants.
They alleviate discomfort from ill-fitting dentures, allowing for comfortable eating, and provide a natural appearance that enhances confidence.
A natural appearance: Implant dentures look more natural and the function of teeth will be more organic once you have them. You will smile with confidence again.
Various attachment options, such as ball, locator, or bar attachments, cater to individual preferences and mouth structures.
You may be surprised at how affordable they are.
What is the Difference Between Implant-Supported Dentures & Implant-Retained Dentures?
Implant-supported dentures and implant-retained dentures both provide stability, comfort, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. However, they differ in their support mechanisms.
Implant-retained Dentures are supported by both dental implants and the gums, making them more cost-effective due to fewer implants. They are removable and require maintenance. They are popular for the lower arch, which often needs more stability. Patients seeking a quick, long-lasting, and less restrictive option may prefer implant-retained dentures.
Implant-supported Dentures offer enhanced security, typically utilizing four or more implants for a stronger bite. They are fully supported by implants, but the increased number of implants raises the cost. Both types require sufficient bone density for implant placement. These dentures usually consist of a custom acrylic arch with removable artificial teeth, secured by screws. The cost varies based on individual patient needs.
Not all patients are eligible for implant-retained or implant-supported dental prostheses. They require a sturdy and strong jawbone for the implant. If you’re interested in implant-retained dental prostheses, it is best to call our office so we can assess your oral health and determine if you qualify for the procedure.
